Today we started off with lectures from Dr. Lori Beatty and Dr. Warren Fieldus who both completed the elective in 2009. They are both emerg docs in Halifax Nova Scotia. They covered topics including ENT, diabetes, diarrhea, and dive medicine. The afternoon was filled with team building activities with the camp Wesley woods staff. Guillaume started the student presentations with a demonstration of Prussik knots. After dinner Chuck Hestor, a GSMP ranger, joined us discussing SAR operations in the park and gave the students some ideas for the end of rotation backpacking trip. As the snow flurries began to fall, the elective started out with Dr. Mel Otten discussing Medical kits, space medicine and bites and stings. Next Fred and Kirk began the WFR portion of the course discussing patient assessment. Students were warned about the perils of hypothermia. After dinner many students were found doing a cross fit/ px90 sort of exercises the the common room. Others headed out to socialize and Smokey Mountain Brewery in Pigeon Forge. After a rainy day of moving in and lots of flight delays the 2015 WMS elective class is relaxing at Buffalo Wild Wings and enjoying the Super Bowl! Ready to start tomorrow with Dr. Mel Otten. Hey there folks! Feb 2 is getting close, and we're excited for the 2015 WMS Elective class!
Attached are guidelines for your short and sweet student presentation portion of the course. This is always a fun way to share your knowledge with the group, enjoyed by students and faculty alike. Please continue to sign-up or adjust your topics on the google doc link below (Steph's email from earlier today).See you all soon! - Liz Student Presentation Guidelines Part of the WMS Elective in Wilderness and Environmental Medicine is the required Student Presentation. This portion allows students to become instructors. Each of you brings unique skills and knowledge to the course. The Student Presentation is your opportunity to share you knowledge or choose a new topic to investigate and then share your knowledge with your new Wilderness Medicine Colleagues. The goal is to have 3 student presentations per day. When you choose your topic, please add it to the Google spreadsheet to that others can see what’s been taken. 15 minutes (exceptions can be made based on your topic) Didactic or Interactive – inside or outside Related to Wilderness and Environmental Medicine Overview of a topic or skill not covered in the curriculum (check calendar) Mini-journal club – recent article on a Wilderness or Environmental Medicine Overview of an outdoor skill or technique – knots, cross-fit, gear Overview of cross-fit – this led to daily morning and evening cross-fit sessions for interested students for the duration of the elective Swift water paddling physics Local (to you) wildlife session – e.g., alligator safety in the everglades, white nose syndrome in bats, mushroom foraging Hello!
Hope everyone is starting to get ready for the elective! Looks like the first week holds the possibility of snow. If you want transportation from the airport please make sure your flight details are updated. If your information is not up there - no one will come and get you :) If you might need last minute gear part of the elective will be a trip to a local Knoxville gear shop, Riversports, - to learn about gear and try some indoor rock climbing (bring climbing shoes if you have them). The store extends a 20% discount to elective participants for any last minute gear you need! The calendar is still being finalized. Feel free to keep checking it as we update it! We're pretty excited about some of the speakers that will be joining us! Feel free to email me any last minute questions! -Stephanie Hi Everyone!
We are very excited about the upcoming elective. The schedule is coming together and we've got some great opportunities for you to learn from some very experienced wilderness medicine practitioners. We do have 1 spot available so if you know of anyone else who wants to join please email me ASAP. After reading this document please feel free to send me any other questions you may have! -Stephanie Travel plans: If you haven't added your travel plans to the google document please do that ASAP! Students being picked up - someone will be there with a WMS Elective Sign in the baggage claim area. We'll be relying on those of you who are driving to help with airport pick ups! Rafting: The first Saturday will be spent rafting. If you have wetsuit/ drysuit please bring it. Otherwise there will be gear available to borrow. The cost of the this trip is included in your tuition. We are finalizing options for camping Friday night prior to the rafting trip, but this is the tentative plan. Hotsprings are also a strong possibility - so bring a bathing suit! Accommodations: We will all be sleeping in a large lodge building which has a several rooms with bunk beds and you'll be divided by gender amongst the rooms. Typically students bring sleeping bag, however twin sized sheets might be nice to cover the mattress. If you are coming by car it might be nice to toss in an extra power strip or short extension cord - as there are limited electric outlets for everyone to use to charge phones, computers, etc. The lodge is heated and bathrooms are located inside. Many evenings are spent here so group games might be fun. There are also hiking trails on the premise. The camp prohibits all alcohol and drugs on site. This is a policy that is taken very seriously and if you are found with alcohol or drugs you will be asked to leave. Tobacco is discouraged and can only be used outside. Students do chose to leave camp in the evenings and head to town to socialize. Grocery stores, laundry facilities, walmart/ target, etc are available nearby. Food: As on the schedule most meals are provided. Feel free to bring some snacks. There is usually hot water and coffee available during lectures. Travel mugs might be a nice if you have one :) Schedule: The schedule is a work in progress. I'm including a link to the current schedule so you'll all have an idea of what to expect. Flexibility is key as with winter weather speakers' travel plan can be disrupted. We'll try to ensure you have enough free time for socializing, exercise, relaxing, etc. You can plan on the grey areas labelled off being off. There will likely be a few hours here and there that are also off - and that will be finalized as we get final confirmations on some last minute speakers. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ieMWJjaSLp-96Ys-0tv3xc2lnrWHtSq1Da25qTUTxL4/edit?usp=sharing Day to day: Every day you will spend time outside doing field training and scenarios so dress appropriately. Weather can range from sunny and 60s to snowy and teens - or 40s with rain. Hats, gloves, rainwear, clothes you don't mind getting dirty, lots of layers, synthetic clothing. This is not a clinic - so dress functionally and comfortably. The classroom can be chilly - so be prepared - a big puffy jacket might be your best friend! Internet: Camp Wesley Woods is a remote camp. Internet access is SOMETIMES available, however is VERY slow and is usually best for just email. If you haven't finalized match lists, etc I'd suggest doing this prior to the elective. Student have gone to town to use internet for this in the past. Phone Coverage: Cell phone coverage can also be spotty. Verizon tends to work the best of carriers, however there are certain places it works better. Therefore please see below for emergency information. I've included my prior email below for reference. 1) Arrival information. Please add your arrival information to this google doc and save it. If you are driving and looking for others from your area to carpool with please indicate that as well. We will need a couple people who are driving to arrive on Saturday to help with airport pick ups. Please let me know you can help out with that! 2) Payment. If you have not paid in full on the WMS website you need to that immediately. Please direct any payment questions to [email protected] 3) Gear: You do not individually need all the gear that could be considered group gear on the list. (tent/ sleeping bag/ etc). Warm clothes however are key! We will be going whitewater rafting and camping and possibly to hot springs the first Friday/ Saturday of the elective. So if you have wet suit/ dry suit/ paddling gear - please bring it! If not there will be plenty of loaner gear available. 4) Individual presentations. Each of you will be expected to do a 15 minute presentation on a wilderness medicine topic of your choice. This could be an area you have a lot of experience or would like to become an expert. I encourage you to try to make these hands on if possible. We will have 2-3 of these each day, starting on Monday. Examples include rescue knots, firestarting, NSAIDs in alititude, etc. Please list your topic on the travel spreadsheet. 5) Daily operations: In the past TK has been on the ground for the entire elective. This year your elective directors are all full time physicians in addition to coordinating the elective, so we will be splitting the time at CWW. This means you will have more of a role in the day to day operations of the elective. On the first day you will be divided into 4 groups and be ask to select a representative. Each group will then be responsible for a week of the elective. More specifics to come. 6) Calendar: I'm hoping to get a tentative calendar out to everyone in early January. We've got some stellar speaker and opportunities lined up for you. I think everyone will be very excited about our line up this year! 7) Please let me know any questions you have! Looking forward to it! -Stephanie |
